It's Municipal Courts Week!

Recently, the Denton City Council issued a proclamation designating the first week of November as Municipal Courts Week. Municipal Courts have jurisdiction over alleged state law Class C misdemeanor violations and municipal ordinance violations. In Texas, Municipal Courts resolve more cases and interact with more citizens than all other courts combined. As such, the administration of justice at the municipal level plays a large part in influencing the public’s overall impression of the Texas judicial system.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Denton’s court staff were tasked with creating both an online court to handle all remote video hearings and also a new online dispute resolution service. Now, most individuals can resolve their court business remotely without ever needing to make an in-person appearance. Also, the court’s new text message and email reminders have greatly improved appearance and compliance rates.

Municipal Courts play a vital role in preserving public safety and protecting the constitutional rights of those appearing before the court. The proclamation recognizes our Municipal Judge and court staff for their exemplary dedication to the community.
