Shooting Suspect Arrested for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon
DENTON, TX, Oct. 17, 2020 – At approximately 5:02 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, Denton Police officers responded to a shooting call in the 1900 block of Brinker Road. Callers stated that a male approached them and said he had been shot. Upon arrival, officers located a male with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Medics transported the 17-year-old victim with serious injuries to a local hospital.
Through an investigation, detectives learned that there was a dispute between the victim, who was driving, and occupants of another vehicle. The two vehicles stopped, and 18-year-old Gemari Barnes (D.O.B. 6/4/2002) is believed to have approached the victim’s vehicle, shot him, then left the scene.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon for Barnes. On Saturday, Oct. 17 at approximately 4:12 p.m., the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and Denton PD detectives apprehended Barnes as he attempted to enter a sedan. Inside the vehicle, officers located a pistol that is currently believed to be the firearm used in the shooting incident. Barnes was transported and booked into the City of Denton Jail without incident.
